I am a true lover of books. I love the feel and smell of a book in my hands. It is my favorite thing in the world to go sit in my office, surrounded by my books. I have so many books and not enough time to read them all! On top of being a slow reader! Honestly, I think I am one of the slowest readers out of all my friends. I don’t know what the problem is, I just have to read every single word.

I also have this issue where I like to read the last page of skip ahead. I can’t help it! I swear, when I was reading Twilight back in the day, I flew to the last chapter of New Moon when Edward left town. I could not stomach the idea that he was gone. Mind you, I read the books as they were released. There was no Eclipse yet! I didn’t know if the series was going to continue. I wasn’t as invested in the book community then as I am now. I had to know. I wanted to throw up and I was going to refuse to read the book if Edward was gone forever. Not really…I still would have read it, but I would NOT have been happy about it.

I realize I am the problem. But I did find a solution! You see, when I am reading an e-book I do not have the same desire to rush to the last page or the last chapter to make sure everything comes out okay. I also seem to read faster when I am reading an e-book. I think it has a lot to do with having just one page at a time to read so my eyes are not jumping to the other side of the book to read what is on the next page. I can’t help myself, I just get excited and my eyes are all over the place. On my Kindle I can only jump a paragraph or so ahead. I can only jump to the end of the page! My excited reading efforts are put into getting to the end of the page rather than seeing what is on the next page. It’s weird, but I read faster! I am also just too lazy to jump ahead to the last page or the last chapter and then go back where I came from.

Honestly, I kind of hate the debate on physical books vs. e-readers. I think e-readers help those with ADD/ADHD as well as those that need bigger text to read. It has it’s advantages. I don’t think it will replace physical books because there are still so many of us that love a good solid physical books. Especially now with the books and their beautiful edges! I personally love the deckled edges! They just make me happy!
With Kindle Unlimited giving us such a huge selection of books we can read for a small monthly fee, on top of free e-books from the library, it gives us so many more options! If I love a book that I read as an e-book, you best believe I am going to buy a physical copy for my own personal collection. I like it this way. I find e-books to be cheaper and I feel like it has really helped bring more people back to reading.
Also, don’t get me wrong, I know you can go to the library and borrow a physical copy to take home for a little bit and bring back. I ask that you also be aware that not everyone lives close to a library. My closest library is 20 to 30 minutes away. The one in my county is even further away from my home. There are some people that do not have the time nor the resources to drive to a library for a book, but most of us have an phone with apps for reading. I would rather someone download an app for reading books than some mindless game.
I am the person that is reading 5 or 6 books at once. In all different variations. E-books, physical, and even audiobooks. But audiobooks is a different topic for a different day!
What do you prefer? Physical or e-book? There is no right answer, mind you, just a preference.

Hi Heather, stumbled upon your blog today – thanks. My preference is for a physical book, but I do use the e-book app on my phone for those times when I have time to kill. Also, our library offers e-books but they are managed just like physical books, if it is popular you are queued on a wait list. Better finish in the time allotted or you’ll find yourself at the end of the queue again.

I had to recently explain to someone that the library only had so many e-book copies and there was a wait for those just like the physical books. I think it’s kind of funny that there is a limited amount of e-books, but I also understand the financial side of limiting the copies.

All about licensing. Have you discovered “BookBuds”?

Oh yeah. I use that and Freebooksy. Free e-books every day. My e-book collection is massive and I know I will never read all the books. Lol I also use NetGalley for ARCs.
